Pitchfork Media has published their list of the top 50 albums of 2005. They've also got their top 50 singles listed, which changes things up a bit. I can't begin to imagine how interesting the discussion about this is going to be. Ready? Go!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know who the heck Sufjan Stevens was. You know your old when you don't recognize 80% of the list.

it looks like someone knows...
Please keep in mind, this list was compiled by a deaf person.
There are plenty of great albums on that list.
I didn't hear the Sufjan Steven album so I can't make a judgement, but his previous album didn't do much for me.
Crap list.
Where was Staind?
You know your old when you don't recognize 80% of the list.
Yeah and the 20% you do know, You don't listen too :(
But maybe we're not that old, these fuckers are the same as the pretentious critics (Like CMJ) who were putting Sigur Ros on their top spot over Radiohead who were being put on the top spot by slightly less pretentious critics (like SPIN) who chose them over Rage Against The Machine (Rolling Stone) who were chosen over the safe bet U.2. (every other magazine in America)
In the past Ive noticed that a good 90% of the bands on these pretentious lists never make it on the next years list. Or never get reviewed by the magazine again.
I own very little from either of those two lists and have only heard of a small percentage of them. My taste in music must suck. :(

As one of the music elite, I must say I agree with some, not with others. And pitchfork, being based out of chicago so I'm biased, has pretty good taste. InIndie Rock and trendy for indie kids to like rap albums, though Common should be on there before Cam'ron or young jeezy.

How do you rate the best live shows specifically, when obviously you can't even begin to compare ones you haven't seen. At least with an album, everyone has a fair chance to listen to them to form an opnion. This is the most subjective, opinionated, invalid list possible. It should be called "best live shows of bands the reviewers like, that they happened to go see".
I read Pitchfork every day. I definitely think it's the most comprehensive music zine available. It's the only one i know, at least, that takes into account independent and mainstream musicians. That being said, it is completely unfair to accuse Pitchfork of only giving credit to "obscure bands". Sufjan Stevens is not even remotely obscure. He gets plenty of radio airplay and has been involved with more music projects and events this year than i could even list. In fact, very few of those bands are obscure. I don't really think a lot of them deserve to be in a "years's best" list, but just because you never bother to listen to anything outside the top 40 stations doesn't mean there's not other music (and arguably, better music) being made..
WHo the fuck is Sufjan Stevens???.. anyone know?.. wait.. let me rephrase that.. anyone NOT a gay ass yuppy know?
The Sufjan Stevens album is actually pretty good. Not a music snob or anything, it's just good music. There's a song on the album for every mood, so you don't have to feel a certain way to listen to it.
Maybe if you would keep your mind open to new stuff, you'd experience a little more-- musically, anyways.
The M.I.A. album "Arular" is pretty horrible, though.

You know your old when you don't recognize 80% of the list.
Make that 101%.
Who the hell are these groups, anyway?
Sufjam Stevens plans to release an album for every state. he's done Michigan and Illinois so far. he writes songs about things that happen in the state (john wayne gacey for illinois, and flint michigan for michigan) it's very... interesting. i kinda like it.
i really expected to have heard of more of these, but i really only recognized 4 or 5 of the artists. lcd soundsystem, franz ferdinand, sufjam stevens... a few others... hmm interesting.
dissapointed at no: caesars, death cab for cutie, keane...
Any TOP FITTY list that includes a holy trinty of suck like Franz Ferdinand, Ladytron and good-God-who-knew Robyn still had a career is immediately and wholly invalidated. Is this truly representational of the impossibly sucky state of current music?
dissapointed at no: caesars, death cab for cutie, keane
that's because those guys were obscure several years ago. Once you make it on a top something list, you cease to be obscure and even though Death cab probably only sold like 12 records last year thats too mainstream for these magazines :p

Top 50?? Then how comes I've only heard of Franz Ferdinand and Kayne West, who both by the why are great!
if it's indie, depressing, and was recorded in a toilet and no one else likes it, pitchfork loves it! indie rock has no balls.

Pitchfork sucks.

Fuck yeah! Sufjan! Antony & the Johnsons, Okkervil River. For once a good top 50 list, could of left out Kanye.... meh.
What I don't like is that the list is only composed of rock/pop/hiphop groups. There are other genres of music, you know.

"Trapped in the Closet"
HAHAHAHA. No respect for this list.
The list is pretty rediculous but I have to agree with Sufjan Stevens at #1. Its a brilliant album and is one of the best records I've heard in awhile. The list is a weird mix of mainstream rap and good indie rock. And most of you are missing the whole point of Pitchfork. It caters mostly to the indie crowd (except the rap) not the billboard/mainstream generic radio crowd so if you don't know this music relax and turn your FM stereos back on.
The M.I.A. album "Arular" is pretty horrible, though.
OMG STFU
i have only listened to two albums on that whole list. one of them is the sufjan stevens album. the fact that he is #1 makes me really respect that list and makes me want to get the ot 48.
Nummah9 is just another number

Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans (2004): Good
Sufjan Stevens - Michigan (2003): Better
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise (2005): Best
Pitchfork is a great source. This site turned me onto lots of bands like Modest Mouse, The White Stripes, Iron and Wine, Postal Service, and plenty of others, many of whom ended up making major label releases that got tons of airplay. Just because you haven't heard of these bands doesn't mean they suck. That FM radio is only going to feed you the music that they think you are smart enough to handle (in most cases, they're probably right). George Bush hates black people.

i love wolf parade. i really doubt that lcd soundsystem should be that high though. cant wait for stylus' top 50, thats my fav online zine.

pretty good list... overall...

Mountain Goats and Silver Jews should have both been top 10 though.
Hell, Silver Jews deserve it for the song "K-Hole" alone.

good choice with Sunn O)))
but I'm biased
Today I learned, if I want to read funny comments on videos about animals pooping or people getting hurt, I'll read fazed's comments. But when you say you haven't even heard of Sufjan, you're telling people you don't know shit about today's music (except for your favorite Britney single from the radio circa 2001).

Like...? Drone? sunno))) is on there. dance? ladytron, MIA, LCD. Metal? Last year incuded mastadon and Pelican and mono I believe. Folk? Sufjan Stevens is number 1 for chissakes.
I think you've overlooked a bit. If there's one things music snobs make sure of, its a decent amount of variety. while death/black metal may not be their forte at pitchfork, they have uite a variety represented. They even (against my wishes) put stuipid gwen stefani on there.
