I think it'd be easier to make them out of a base + hair, then just stick 'em on the girls' heads than to photoshop 'em.

I'm fairly sure they wouldn't make the models stick around for that. Not only that, the hair of the animals doesn't ever quite match the models' actual hair. They made the headpieces, complete with fake hair, and pinned them on for the shoot.
