Super Mario Quad Run

All 3 NES Super Mario Bros. games along with Famicon SMB are beaten simultaneously, using only one controller for the input on all games.

this is completely impossible. you cant simultaneously focus on timing the perfect jump on 4 different screens.

it's not fake, it's a TAS. TAS = Tool Assisted Speedrun. Basically, instead of playing the game, the person puts the button presses in with frame level timing, so that the game plays itself. By adjusting the timing of the presses, you can sometimes achieve strange effects by doing things that are impossible with an actual controller. So what's happening here is that the guy made a set of presses that worked on all four games simultaneously. He exploits the timing a bunch so that some jumps needed for one guy happen when the other guy is in the air or between levels or whatever. The moving backwards on one while forwards on another can be achieved in some games by doing things like pressing both left and right at the same time, which is impossible to do with a controller, but totally doable if you're controlling what button is being pressed at the frame timing level. So no, it's not fake, but it is using tricks that you can't actually do with a real controller.

From the comments. Makes it less impressive if you ask me.

Alternative explanation is that Luigi is just a bullshit overpowered character in SMB2 and we're still waiting on the patch that nerfs him into oblivion

Bullshit. My reason:

Dude uses only two warp whistles in world 1 to get to world 8. Anyone who's played SMB3 knows that using the two whistles in the first world will only give you the option to play worlds 5-7. The only tool present here is the guy claiming it's legit.

If you use the warp whistle inside the warp zone you go to world eight

Then I must have grown up with a faulty SMB3 cart all those years. I remember being quite pissed when I used the second whistle and landed on the second row, forcing me to complete the goddamned pipe world.

These videos really never impress me. I'd rather see a guy take longer while beating it legitimately in realtime.

I'm as much of a whore for classic games as anyone, but this just seems like a boring waste of time.

I think it's pretty cool. I look at as a novel feat of puzzle-solving skill and painstaking effort. Yeah, it doesn't really involve video gaming skill, and the end product doesn't serve any useful purpose other than to amuse. That's OK by me.

there's a better(?) one of these for a guy beating MegaMan 3, 4, 5 and 6. I think its better because the games are more coherent together... these are all just too different somehow

Using a computer program makes this not at all impressive. Sigh.

It still required some ingenuity and a lot of effort. Or if it didn't, the tools he used must have been pretty impressive (I've seen YouTube videos where AI or evolutionary algorithms are used to play Mario games, which I was pretty impressed, or at least intrigued by).

Yeah, it would be more impressive if he had done this without tools. Because that would mean the guy has literally inhuman cognitive abilities.

This sentiment strikes me a little like saying a fight scene in a movie isn't as impressive because they used wires to assist with the acrobatics, CG and stunt doubles. Because yeah, doing the kinds of fight scenes you see in movies would often be impossible with all of that. They can still be impressive though, for the amount of work and the different skills involved.

I think fight scenes in movies (especially ones that require wires and CG) are really stupid. Does that mean it's ok for me to claim this video is stupid?

I don't think it's stupid. It's just right about in line with the patience video.

The internet is more and more becoming a "Look at how much time I can spend on this one thing that practically nobody else cares about" high score list.

You can think whatever you want. I just think it's kind of silly to say "Oh, not impressive because he [used tools and methods which still require skill and painstaking effort to use successfully] to [do something that would otherwise be impossible]."

Also, things can be stupid (or just not to my liking) and still be impressive on some level.

And anyway, most people while away hundreds of hours doing even less productive stuff than this -- watching TV, playing video games at a mediocre level of skill, etc. At least this has some entertainment value and is somewhat novel.

And just to clarify, the fact that he used a program to do it means that anyone with that program and 300 spare hours could do this. It's not a skill thing.
